Choosing a Peninsula high school: curriculum, support, and fit
Use this page if you are a parent placing a younger student in the Palo Alto Unified School District and you need the district's access rules before you compare high schools.
This page covers PAUSD only, because that is the district whose placement and choice pages were checked on September 27, 2026. It is not a ranking of Peninsula high schools. It does not claim that changing schools improves college admission. Gunn and Paly are the high schools this district's transfer notes discuss. Gardner Bullis is an elementary school in a separate arrangement with Los Altos School District, not a high school.
Start with the school your address can actually use.
PAUSD assigns a neighborhood school from the home address. Elementary schools are grouped into clusters that feed the same middle and high schools. If the neighborhood school is full, the district may overflow the student to another school in the cluster and keep a waitlist for the neighborhood school. Transitional kindergarten does not follow that neighborhood process. The district's School Finder is the tool for the address you have, not a list of schools you may pick.
Choice programs are a different door, and the Choice Programs page describes elementary and middle school programs: Hoover, Ohlone, Mandarin and Spanish dual immersion, JLS Connections, Greene bridge programs, and Fletcher's Sustainability for All. The lottery dates printed there, January 20, 2026, through February 20, 2026, were for that application window. They are not a high school magnet lottery. One Fletcher note says a student who lives in the Paly neighborhood and is accepted to Fletcher's program may continue to Gunn for high school pathways and may also return to Paly. That is a specific continuation. It is not open choice between the high schools.
If the seat at a choice program is accepted, the neighborhood seat is forfeited. A student receiving special education services is placed through a transition or IEP meeting, not by the lottery alone.
Transfers are limited, and the windows are dated.
The district's placement page, checked September 27, 2026, says the 2026-27 intradistrict transfer window is closed. Requests after the school year has begun may be considered case by case, for special circumstances. Intradistrict requests for 2027-28, for students already in PAUSD, are scheduled from January 7, 2027, through February 19, 2027. Every request for a non-neighborhood school depends on space.
Interdistrict transfer into PAUSD for 2026-27 is also closed. For 2027-28, the page says requests are accepted from December 7, 2026, through February 19, 2027, and that the district does not anticipate approving transfers except categories in Board Policy 5117 and its regulation: Project Search, a PAUSD employee program at 80 percent employment or more, junior/senior privilege, and hardship with documentation. A family living outside the district still needs the home district's approval first. None of this is a promise of a seat.

Use this only for a school the address, overflow rule, or a dated transfer window actually makes available. It is not a ranking, and neither school is described here as an Ivy Ready partner. Checked September 27, 2026. Blank cells mean that fact was not on the page used for that row.

The Paly catalog's September 18, 2026, lane-change date is the 2026-27 first-semester deadline. It had passed by this check. Do not reuse it for a later term. The same catalog still describes second semester as down-lane within the first two weeks, and no up-laning.
College destination counts are not a row in this table. They do not decide which school the address assigns. Those counts are a college-list question. What Peninsula high school college outcomes mean for your college list is how to read a destination list without treating it as a reason to move. For a student who is already at Paly or Gunn and is choosing next year's courses, use junior- and senior-year course planning at Paly and Gunn. For a student who is not yet in high school, the nearer task is the course plan at the school they will attend. The 9th grade course planning worksheet is the place to write that plan. It does not choose the high school.
What to ask before you visit.
Ask Registration Services, not a forum: which school is the neighborhood school for this address, and is overflow possible? If you are asking about 2027-28, which window applies, intradistrict or interdistrict, and which policy category if any? If a choice program is elementary or middle school, what happens to the high school assignment afterward, in that program's own words?
Parents: write the school your address assigns today, and one constraint you will not skip, such as commute or an IEP process. Leave college outcomes out of the first pass. They do not tell you which school you are allowed to attend.
