Using nearby campus visits to learn what fits

Use this page if you want a nearby campus visit to answer a specific question about fit, before you plan travel farther away.

Checked September 27, 2026. The three examples are Stanford University, Foothill College, and San Jose State University, because each publishes a visitor path and each is a different kind of campus. They are not a ranking, and they are not the only colleges worth seeing. A visit does not, on these pages, increase the chance of admission.

Students: write the question you want the visit to answer, then pick the campus that can answer it. Parents: handle registration, parking, and whether a guided tour is actually open. The campus visit notes worksheet is where those notes go. The college visits and virtual tours guide is the general plan for families who cannot travel. This page does not replace it.

What each official page lets you do.

Stanford	The campus-visit page publishes Fall 2026 guided-tour times on weekdays: Tuesday through Friday at 10:15 a.m., Monday through Friday at 1:15 p.m., and Monday through Thursday at 3:15 p.m. A combined information session and tour is listed at other weekday times and runs about 2.5 hours. The walking tour itself is described as about 90 minutes and about 2 miles, flat and accessible. Registration is required. There is no online waitlist. Most weekends are self-guided. Guided programming on that page runs through Friday, December 18, 2026, with listed days that are self-guided only, including December 18 through January 3. Winter dates, January 4 through March 26, open for registration on Monday, October 26, 2026, at 12:00 p.m. Pacific. A specific day can still be full.	Do not book travel until the confirmation email exists. If the tour you wanted is full or not offered, the page's own substitute is a self-guided tour or the virtual visit, not a claim that the family visited admissions. Foothill College	Outreach lists campus tours and a request at outreachprogram@fhda.edu. The current page does not print a tour length, so this guide does not keep the older 45-minute line. Day on the Hill is an annual spring open house, and the next date was not posted at this check. The Transition to Work tour is a different program.	Foothill's Parking and Transportation page is the Fall 2026 update: a digital permit is required, currently enrolled students, faculty, and staff can get one free, and visitors use a separate daily permit, which may be purchased or completed with a pre-approved complimentary code.	Whether a community-college campus and class setting match what the student wants, including the Los Altos Hills site.
San Jose State	SOAR describes a one-hour in-person tour led by student ambassadors, plus a virtual tour, a video tour, and a self-guided option. Drop-in counseling at the Welcome Center is listed weekdays 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The preparing-for-your-visit page still gives the North Parking garage address as the Student Services Center, 60 S. 9th Street, San Jose. Campus-closure dates posted on the visit page include September 7, November 11, November 26, and November 27, 2026.	The confirmation email is the cancellation path. Parking Services says a permit is required with no grace period, and that weekday mornings are difficult. Confirm the day you want is still offered before you drive. This page does not estimate drive times. Traffic and parking are part of the parent's check, from a map, not from a blog.

Two visit plans.

Plan A is a student who learns by walking a campus and asking a current student questions. If Stanford's guided registration has no seat for the day you need, the substitute on Stanford's own site is a self-guided or virtual tour, not a claim that the family visited admissions. A Foothill Outreach tour is a different conversation: college classes while the student is still in high school, not a residential campus. Pick the one that matches the question.

Plan B is a family that cannot take a weekday. Stanford's page says most weekends and university holidays are self-guided. SJSU publishes a virtual tour for that case. Foothill's Day on the Hill is spring and, as of this check, has no next date. A virtual route is a complete plan when the weekday does not work. It is not a lesser plan.

Neither plan needs a longer trip until the notes show a question these campuses cannot answer. Use the college-list fit guide for the academic, financial, and daily-life questions that a walk will not settle. The college research worksheet is where those questions get written down.

What not to conclude.

A tour confirmation is not an application advantage. Stanford's campus-visit page says Stanford does not track demonstrated interest, and that participation in campus visit opportunities is optional and has no bearing on admission if the student later applies. Do not add a visit-helps-admission claim for Foothill or San Jose State either. If another college uses demonstrated interest, that rule has to come from that college's current policy.

Students: write one question, and which row of the table can answer it. Parents: write the registration status you checked, including "full" or "date not posted" if that is what the page says.

After the visit.

The worksheet is done when it has a question, an answer or a blank, and a date. A blank is allowed. "We liked it" is not an answer.

Bring those notes to the fit guide if the visit did not answer academic or financial questions. Do not schedule a farther trip to repair a vague note.
